Richard has a background primarily in the commercial sector where he has had roles of CEO in both large and start-up businesses.

He trained as a pilot with British Airways before deciding on a management career in the 1970s. He was awarded The Principals Prize for his flying course. His commercial career was initially in the International Oil Industry with Total Oil in both the UK and Europe and he ran a Joint Venture for Total, Texaco and Mobil at Heathrow in the late 70s. He was seconded to the Paris HQ of Total. In this role he set up a new business at Brussels Airport for the State Airline Sabena. On leaving the Oil Industry he worked for Grand Met Brewing as Distribution Director and then Courage on its acquisition of the business. In 1995 he joined Exel Logistics (now DHL) as Operations Director and became CEO Europe responsible for 25000 employees in 6 business units.

He then moved to an internet start up in the dotcom boom and later moved back to aviation as CEO of Aviance the aviation business of the Go Ahead Group.

He was President in the UK and Internationally for The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and appointed CBE in 2004 for his work in creating this organization and contribution to the logistics and transport sectors.

He served as a Non-Exec on the Highways Agency Advisory Board, and most recently was Chairman of The London Ambulance Service. He is presently Commanding Officer of The Staff Corps a long established group of advisors to The Army.
